Dorothy Ellen Mather
August 25, 1928 - January 30, 2022
Dorothy H. Mather, 93, of Queensbury, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 30, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy, fondly known as “Dot” or “Dottie,” was born on August 25, 1928 in Petersburg, Virginia to Gilbert and Madeline Hale. Eventually they relocated to Fairlawn, NJ where Dottie grew up attending Ridgewood High School before transferring to Fairlawn High School completing her degree. After High School, Dottie attended Ursinus College, majoring in English. The first chapter of Dottie’s life was devoted to her husband and her children. Robert and Dottie were married on June 15, 1957. They began their family in Oakland, NJ but moved to Pompton Plains a few years later where they settled down. She supported her husband, as he completed his schooling for his Architecture License, assisted him with preparing endless job proposals for his business and acted as his “right hand.” while raising her three children. After Robert suddenly passed on January 28, 1976, Dottie’s second chapter began working in the local school system until her life took a surprising turn, as she received a condolence phone call a few years later from Bob Kurkewicz (a/k/a “Mr. K”) a Pompton Plains local, and over time they began a relationship that lasted over 30 years. Mr. K was an extraordinary woodcarver and combined with my Mom’s natural ability to draw people in with her vibrant personality, Wildlife Carvings was eventually born. Therefore, it was not long before Mom, Jo and Scott moved to Manahawkin since Bob’s gallery was located on Long Beach Island, NJ. Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert, her only son, Scott and her companion of over 30 years, Robert Kurkewicz. She is survived by her two daughters Lori and Joanne, her son-in-law, Nate Glinbizzi, Jr. and her daughter-in-law, Kathleen. Dorothy was blessed with four grandchildren, Heather, Zoe, Anthony and Victoria; her cousin, Allen Hale and his wife, Jane. Dottie also maintained a very close relationship with her companion, Mr. K’s children; Bobbie and his wife, Sue; their children, Trina and Bryan and Diane and her husband, Christopher, and their children; CJ and Nicole, throughout her life. There will be an interment ceremony held at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery located at 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ at 1:30 pm on Saturday, February 12. A repast will follow at Michele’s Restaurant & Milan Banquets, 32 Passaic Street, Garfield, NJ. Flowers are permitted to be sent to the cemetery or in lieu of flowers, donations in Dottie’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association or Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. Arrangements are under the care of the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at sbfuneralhome.com
