Edward Nicholas "Mitch" Mitchell

November 6, 1939 - March 10, 2022

Edward Nicholas “Mitch” Mitchell of Schenectady, New York, transitioned peacefully from his home in the Bellevue neighborhood of Schenectady, to his heavenly home, Thursday, March 10, 2022. Mitch began his earthly sojourn on November 6, 1939 in Queens, New York. He was the only child of the late Nicholas Edward Mitchell and the late Mary G. Mitchell. As he was their only child, the Mitchells took every opportunity to provide Mitch with an enriched and meaningful upbringing, including enrolling him in Catholic Grammar and High School, and providing him the opportunity to learn how to play the accordion. After High School, Mitch enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for five years, serving overseas in North Africa, and at Strategic Air Command in the Southwest US, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During that time he met his first wife, Marlene. They were blessed with his only child, Nicholas Edward. After discharge from the Air Force, Mitch and family embarked upon a life in Queens. During this period of his life, Mitch pursued his love of music by forming a jazz band called The Incidentals. In this, he was following in the footsteps and playing in the style of his idol, the legendary jazz drummer and fellow Polish American, Gene Krupa. Mitch took employment with Consolidated Edison (now more popularly known as “Con Ed”) first as a meter reader before eventually being promoted to counselor in the company’s medical department. He became credentialed as an alcohol and substance abuse counselor after taking special credentialing courses at Rutgers University. While at Con Ed, Mitch taught himself to play the guitar. It proved a useful skill. It was during his time at Con Ed that Mitch met the love of his life, Lois, who was also working in the Medical Department. He used his newly-formed guitar skills to woo Lois, who would eventually become his wife. In all, Mitch worked for Con Edison for 22 years. He relocated to Schenectady thereafter, taking an entrepreneurial turn as a unique wares vendor. Before long, he settled on just one particular item for sale: hot dogs. Equipped with a top-of-the-line hot dog truck, Mitch’s hot dog business brought him customers from all over Schenectady – including the mayor, the fire chief and other dignitaries. He became known as “the hot dog man of Schenectady,” so named by a feature article about him in the Schenectady Daily Gazette. While in Schenectady, his love of music did not wane. Rather, he frequently played country music and sang country music in many venues around the Capital District, sometimes with wife, Lois. When Lois joined Duryee Memorial AME Zion Church, Mitch – born and raised a Catholic, nevertheless became such a regular participant in worship services with Lois as to be considered a beloved honorary Duryee member. It was at Duryee that he got to fulfill a lifelong dream of being an actor, by participating in some of the church plays. It was his wish that Duryee lead services for his homegoing celebration. Mitch was predeceased by parents Nicholas and Mary Mitchell. He is survived by his beloved wife Lois, son Nicholas and former wife Marlene, cousins Celine and Matthew, stepdaughter Tamara and her son Aton, many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mitchell made friends everywhere, whether it was the restaurant waitress, the doctor or the doctor’s nurse. He was a lifelong friend of Bill W. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday March 17th from 10 am until 12 noon followed by a Celebration of Mitch’s Life at 12noon at Lights Funeral Home, 1428 State St., Schenectady. Mitch was Lois’s “Honey Bunny,” and the flowers on the casket call him “My Mitch,” which is what Lois is frequently heard to say when speaking lovingly of him. She and the family ask that, in lieu of flowers, you make donations to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in his name. To do so, visit https://heroes.vfw.org/page/21776/donate/.
